Additional information

Hi, In regards to Business Consulting, is it the same as Management Consultant at PwC? I'm very interested in business/management consulting as a career path and was wondering if in the UK&I team whether consultants work across many different industries, e.g. consumer goods, retail, oil, fashion, technology, media, telecommunications etc. In regards to projects, are consultants only staffed in London and around the UK at client sites, or do business consultants regularly have projects that are international and require plane travel to different countries in order to get to the client site. Also, how typical is it for those on the Business Consulting graduate scheme to join EY -Parthenon and specialise in Strategy Consulting after the two-year consulting grad scheme? If that is not a typical path, is it certainly possible to do so? Obviously Business/Management Consulting is not a typical 9-5 job and consultants regularly put in long hours during projects. What measures have EY implemented to help their business consultants not get burnt out and overworked over several client projects? Is there down-time after projects, do consultants actually have say over what projects they are staffed on or are they assigned without their personal opinions and interests taken into account? Do Business Consultants stay/live at the client side Monday-Thursday and return to their base office on Friday, and then travel out again Sunday night/Monday early morning, or are arrangements different to this? I know I have asked a lot of questions but I would really appreciate it if I could get a deep insight and answers into my queries! Kind regards, Mohammed

consulting

Hey Mohammed, Firstly I apologise for the very delayed response - as you can imagine with xmas fast approaching deadlines have also been piling up!
So a management consultant (which is what I am) who is not specifically aligned to "business" or "tech" would cover all the areas you've mentioned above - e.g. consumer goods, retail, oil, fashion, technology, media, telecommunications etc. A business consultant from my understanding would not focus on tech related projects but would cover most other areas - but I would do some further research into this as "business" and "tech" consulting are not offered in my base location so I do not know a whole lot about their specifications and scope.
Most engagements are based in the UK, however there are opportunities to travel and it is very much down to each individual to drive their career in the direction they want it go. I have been fortunate in that my first engagement was abroad however I would put it down to being in the right place, at the right time and getting incredibly lucky! I have not heard of many other first years to have travelled abroad for their engagements but it is something that definitely increases the higher you move up the ladder.
I have never actually come across EY Parthenon and i'm not too sure how the promotion for business consulting actually works - with management consulting in UK&I we are given the option to promote into a workstream of our choice at the end of second year which includes strategy consulting - whether or not this is also offered to business consultants I couldn't say.
So the general working pattern is that you travel and stay at your client site location Mon - Thurs - however this can vary based on your client. I have previously done Mon - Wed/ and on occasion mon - Friday on client site but again it is very much down to your team and client. On Friday's you can work from home or from your base office if you are not at client site - this is down to your own personal preference. Depending on EY requirements you do tend to move directly from one engagement to the next and there isn't any down time in between but again it is dependent on the needs of the business. Most often you do get a say in the engagement you are starting on and you can keep in regular contact with resourcing to share your requirements and wants for an engagement/ but again there will be occasions where you may be on an engagement that does not directly align to your personal objectives - what I would say is during the first few years everything is a learning experience so there is not a single project which will hinder/not benefit you in any way.

I hope that helps - i think the take home message is that you should be flexible and open minded as a consultant and be open to opportunities of all shapes and sizes! Again, I apologise for the delay in response, let me know if you have any other questions.
